Nikki asked:
I’m getting married some time next year and am looking into having an alternative wedding of sorts. I would love to find a dress that is medieval or victorian inspired in design that can be custom made for me. I’m thinking of possibly an Alice In Wonderland theme. I found gowns on this site that greatly appeal to me: http://www.uptight-clothing.co.uk/Gowns/gownsFrameset.htm but it is a UK site and you have to be present for consultation and fittings. Does anyone know of an American website or a shop around the Massachusetts area that could have something I might like? I’m plus-size as well, so that has to be figured in. I’d love something traditional but with a modern/punkish twist. Preferabley a white or ivory gown with some colored detailing. Thank you in advance!

I would check and see if you have a local Renessaince Festival. A lot of times you can get semstresses from there. I had a friend who actually got married at a festival, and they were very helpful with the dress. Another place is Hot Topic. Check out there website, or Torrid. They have a few ideas, not many though
Those gowns are stunning!
While the styles aren’t identical, this link is listed on Uptight as an American dressmaker:
If you go to and register for the forums (link is on the right side of the page called Offbeat Bride Tribe), there are many links to custom dress sites catering to alternative weddings and the ladies there are extremely helpful. There is also a plus size group in that same community that you may want to join to get ideas as well.
Another great place to check out is which caters to medieval weddings. You can find a ton of dress ideas there that are in the US.
Good luck!
Try Dressbuilder.com – great site & there’s a bunch of good ones on E-bay. Also, I second Off-Beat Bride – what a bunch of great gals – they’ll really help you and have lots of tips!
any of the medieval simplicity patterns can be used for a wedding dress. make sure you make a “mockup”, becuase the simplicity patterns have to be adjusted a lot.
These are several I looked at when I was considering going this route:
